Artist, Designer and Printmaker

I am a retired university lecturer currently living in Brighton (UK) and working mainly on drawing, painting and printmaking. My current focus is on creating Pen, Pencil, Charcoal drawings and photopolymer etchings.  I am developing a creative printing technique which allows me to combine original artwork with digital photographs to realise both mono and multiple colour etched outcomes.

I studied Fine Art and trained as a teacher working as an Art and Design Technology educator for more than 30 years in Primary and Secondary schools as well as training teachers at Undergraduate (B.A.), Post-Graduate and Masters level.

Work History
1999 - 2007

  • During this time I organised and ran an Art and Design, IT and Technology Children’s University. This entailed using the University of Greenwich facilities to work with London Borough of Greenwich Primary school children (aged 7-11) on a range of innovative, practical problem solving activities. This enabled c. 2000 local children access to learn vital skills whilst giving them access to the University campus, staff and facilities.

  • Alongside this I also undertook PHD level research across Europe into the possible development of techniques to enhance skills and confidence in visual language (graphicacy) among children and their teachers.

1986 - 2007

  • Whilst working as a principal lecturer at the University of Greenwich I taught on undergraduate B.A.Honours, P.G.C.E. and Masters level programs with an emphasis on design methods, design work and developing visual language and graphical skills.

  • During this time I devised and ran over 100 INSET (In-Service Training courses for teachers) across the UK, Norway, Sweden, South Africa, Netherlands and Portugal. I have published Design and Technology books and a range of support packages and display resources.

  • Alongside this work and working with my colleague Jim Golden and in partnership with the Design Museum of London we developed and trialled a new nationally funded resourcing to enable innovative ‘Built Environment’ projects to be delivered in schools via a uniquely designed loan box of architectural artefacts and project worksheets.

1976 - 1986

  • Design and Technology teacher in Secondary schools (11-18 year old students)

1972 - 1976

  • Freelance Designing, Building and Restoration work. Notably myself and a team restored the Waterloo chamber at Windsor Castle.
